Our school faces extreme heat problems during every summer. Especially this year (2021) due to COVID-19 the school year ends on late June. Our PULCHRA science team is ready for action. 12 students from 1st and 2nd grade are currently involved.
The Team is open for new members!!!
The science team has formed small subteams of 2-3 students in order to explore all dimensions of our school’s problem.
Each subteam’s job is described below:
1st subteam: To explore the effects of climate change in cities.
2nd subteam: Define the problematic areas of our schoolyards.
3rd subteam: Search for possible solutions appropiate for our school
4 subteam: Measure the surface temperatures found in our schoolyards
5 subteam: Science reporters to inform the rest of the students about the project nad create a plan to promote our project outside the school.

Our Science Team invited Mr. Anastasios Polydoros from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens to talk about urban climate change issues and discuss how it affects their everyday life. We also talked about the use of land surface temperatures measurements in order to define the surface materials of our school that are hotter in the summer.

On 20/05/2021 we took surface temperature measurements in different places of our school.
It was inetresting to find out that our sports field is the hottest place in our school although we enjoy spending time and playing there. Shaded areas were the coolest places of our school so we colncluded that we should create more shaded areas. Our first try is to place a small tent at our green corner.
The lack of vegetated areas is the biggest disadvantage of our school; some small green corners that we have are sparcely vegetated so temparatures are pretty high.
Using the Google Earth application we explored the natural shading of our school. We found out that from 11.00 in the morning our schoolyards and our basketabll court have no protection form the sunlight.
With the help of an architect we are trying to design a new look for our school. Our first try is to cretae a green roof to one of our school’s buildings.
The science reporter of our school has prepared an information sheet about climate change and its effects in cities and our daily life.
