A place for everyone
This school year we continue the challenge Places in cities, that connect people with nature. We still strive to support biodiversity of our school garden as well as near surroundings of our school.
In autumn 2021, we managed to expand our flowering meadow in the school garden and plant spring bulbs. In the spring 2022 we are preparing flower beds for sowing honey-bearing plants, the annual Phacelia tanacetifolia and Lamium perennials (Dead-nettles). We have been promised some plant excavations from the Garden of Medicinal Plants, Faculty of Pharmacy, Charles University in Hradec Králové.
Our cooperation with HK Technical Services continues. Green public grass near school will only be mowed in mosaic manner.
We have established cooperation with the Czech Association of Beekeepers, the basic organization of Hradec Králové. Under the guidance of experienced beekeepers, we will try to keep bees in the school garden. We placed bumblebee hives in the garden and we believe bumblebee queens will settle in them in the spring.
We placed more bird feeders and drinkers in the school garden. In January 2022 we participated in the Bird Hour Programme, organized by the Czech Ornithological Society. By counting the birds in our school garden, we helped monitor the state of wintering birds in the Czech Republic.
Our cooperation with Mgr. Josef Laštovička continues. Under his guidance we completed an online course on remote sensing data and learned to create maps in geographical IT system QGIS.
We perform pedological measurements according to the GLOBE methodology to monitor the influence of vegetation on the soil temperature and moisture. We wish to compare these data to those acquired through remote sensing.
We have new climbing frames in our school garden, which were financed by the „Friends of ZŠ Štefcova Club”.
We regularly inform the public about our activities on social media and school web. In June we are preparing a Garden Party, an event open to public.
