Following the outcomes of the 1st City Challenge project of our school (the lack of vegetated areas is the biggest disadvantage of our school, shaded areas were the coolest places of our school, etc.), we were motivated to apply the same methodology to city scale, while finding out the main issues of a city and the ways that it can become “smarter”.
The science team has formed four teams in order to explore all dimensions of our project.
• 1st team: To explore the advantages of remote sensing for the analysis of the urban environment.
• 2nd team: Use the remote sensing tool of the pulchra platform to analyse the urban characteristics of Athens.
• 3rd team: Measure the surface temperatures of the university campus in order to explore the relation between surface temperatures and ground materials
• 4th team: the Science reporters team will inform the rest of the students about the project and create a plan to promote our project outside the school.

The science reporter of our school has prepared a mini report about our project and the activities we made this year.

From our surface temperature measurements results, we found out that the man made materials have substantially higher surface temperature compared to natural materials (grass, soil, water, etc.), while the vegetated areas percentages for Athens were very low, a fact that highlights the main issue of our city.
With the use of the remote sensing tool it was easy to identify which areas of our city have the larger surface temperatures and we could identify the areas that should be regenerated with the use of nature-based materials.
