In the current school year 2021/2022, as part of the European Project Science in the City: Building Parcticipatory Urban Learning Community Hubs through Research and Activation, we took up the challenge “Vegetation versus concrete – How to connect a building with vegetation and change the microclimate around the school?” We have completed the following tasks:

The PULCHRA European project provided us with a lot of joy and resulted in a change in the arrangement of green infrastructure in the vicinity of the school. In literal translation, PULCHRA means beautiful and the project serves to create beauty. By systematically raising environmental awareness through numerous project activities, we understand the message that “Listening to the voice of science is our only chance for further – how beautiful! – journey through space on the Spacecraft Earth. However, when the climate changes too much, the ship will continue to run, without us as passengers. We don’t have another planet – we have to save the one.” We offer hands “willing to work, heads full of ideas and undying enthusiasm”. Will we win? Will we win the fight for Earth?
ŻEROMSKI FOR THE EARTH
It has been known for a long time that Żeromski’s students are eager to work for the climate. This is due to our Youth Environmental Leaders: Maja Świderska (class IIF), Julia Wolska (IIF), Aleksandra Stępień (IIICg) and Maciej Gorycza (IIF).
These young people put a lot of emphasis on raising environmental awareness. On their own initiative, they prepared a diaporama entitled: “Environmental protection close to everyone’s heart” and a multimedia presentation “Earth Day”. These materials were used by teachers and educators in preparation for the Earth Day 2022 celebrations. Based on the content presented in them, talks and short quizzes were conducted in the classrooms.
A real holiday in honor of Mother Earth was the organization of the Earth Day celebrations, which took place at our school on April 28, 2022. The event was graced by the presence of: Mrs. Maria Barbara Chomicz – Deputy Starost of the Opoczyński District, Mrs. Anna Pręcikowska – Skoczylas – Head teacher of the Stefan Żeromski High School in Opoczno, Mrs. Anna Ksyta– Deputy Director of the Stefan Żeromski High School in Opoczno, Mr. Zbigniew Sobczyk- Deputy Director of the Stefan Żeromski High School in Opoczno, teachers and youth of the school.
After the ceremonial welcome, our Head teacher Anna Pręcikowska – Skoczylas took the floor and she was full of appreciation for youth action for the climate. Then Mrs. Maria Barbara Chomicz – The Deputy Starost of the Opoczno County shared her observations on climate action in various regions of the world. She expressed her joy at the environmental initiatives undertaken at the Stefan Żeromski High School in Opoczno.
Later in the meeting, the moderators of the ceremony: Maja Świderska, Julia Wolska i Maciej Gorycza reminded everyone that Earth Day has been celebrated since 1970. This year’s edition was held under the slogan “Climate Action”.
After this statement, everyone watched a wonderful spectacle entitled: “Portrait of the Earth” prepared by the ladies teaching Polish – Mrs. Iwona Pęczek and Mrs. Halina Mikołajczyk. The performance beautifully exposes people’s attitudes towards the Earth. The conclusion was a hope for a better tomorrow. It was a very suggestive and thought-provoking image.
The next point of the Earth Day celebrations was the extremely exciting School Ecotourage “One of the Fourteen”. Representatives of each class took part in it. Each of them could use one of two lifebuoys: “half and half” or “question to the audience”. It was won by class IIB, in the second place was class IIIC, and in the third place – class IG.
During this ceremony, we could not miss the dance for the Earth, which was performed by the world champion in modern dance Nadia Witoń from the IIC class.
Continuing the celebrations, the event leaders invited everyone to watch ecological video spots prepared by students of eight classes for the ECO WORLD VS. ENVIRONMENT competition. They presented forms of nature protection and a brief description of the country that was drawn by a given class. All the works were very interesting, the jurors did not have an easy task. Finally, the results were announced: the first place was taken by the IC class, the second place was taken by the IIAF2 class, the third place went to the IIB class.
Maciej Gorycza – the originator of the competitions thanked all classes for participating in the celebrations. Special expressions of gratitude were addressed to The Director Anna Pręcikowskiej – Skoczylas for valuable organizational support and funding attractive prizes for participants of all competitions, openness and kindness. The youth also thanked the Deputy Directors of Mrs. Anna Ksyta and Mr. Zbigniew Sobczyk and the teachers of the nature block, who supervised the entire event.
Julia Wolska, who was closing the ceremony, pointed out that “Nature teaches us harmony, gives us respite. It shows that haste serves no purpose. It is a dignified companion of our lives. How long it will please us depends on our little deeds.”
Today we remember this beautiful meeting with fondness. Leaders: Maja, Julia and Maciej emphasize that today’s time is an awakening, a time of action in respect for the laws of the natural environment

If their speeches are accepted, then they will present them during the National Conference “Young people about climate 2022”.
In addition, Maciej Gorycza is preparing for the biggest event of the year in the geographical environment – the Jubilee Geographical Congress, which will take place in Łódź. Maciej will present his work “Our school for the climate”.
If our Youth Leaders of Environmental Protection continue to act as they did this year, and everything points to it, then “Mother Earth will not cry with the deforestation of alarmed forests, the Oldest Spirits of the Backwoods will still remain there”.
