The learning activities included awareness of the climate change and the consequences in the city environment. The impact of these consequences on citizens everyday life.
It was given to the students the definition of the thermal island as well as examples, studies and experiments.
We explored the application developed by a science team of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Engineering department of University of Thessaly named “TakeItSerious” (https://ctll.e-ce.uth.gr/index.php/tis/ ) which helps on “disaster management” and enhancing communities’ resilience to extreme natural phenomena such as earthquakes etc.
Particularly the students dealt with the possibility of a serious heatwave in our city, the ways of efficient preparation as well as the impact in citizens’ lives and city’s infrastructure.

The science team of the project with the guidance and help of our mentors from the University of Athens learned how to use instruments for measuring the thermal impact. They also learn what the procedures are for a valid measurement and scientific experiment.
Then they took samples of temperature from different materials in our schoolyard, exposed to sunshine and in the shadow. They wrote down their measurements, they did the processing in our school’s computer lab and they made their conclusions.
They wrote a brief report showing their work.
It is important to mention that more than 25 students worked in the science team and and they compared their measurements, they discussed their processing and after many meetings they produced one presentation to conclude their work.
Another activity that took place in our school was in the framework of a student’s study of the University of Thessaly. Our school’s students participated in a survey about households’ energy footprint.
In particular a student from the University of Thessaly visited our school, familiarised a group of our students about the energy footprint of some household appliances and he teached them about using s specific platform for a survey he had created on energy consuming household appliances.
There was an interesting discussion on hou
sehold appliances and how we can see or calculate their energy consumption from their characteristics on the user’s manual or their energy label. The students answered a survey on a digital platform, about household’s appliances energy consumption, what the common mistakes are that we do and may burden the climate change and how we can save energy with small changes on our everyday habits.
