In this project the students will explore the effects of building materials on the efficiency and sustainability of houses. The students will build small houses, and investigate their isolating properties using infrared cameras. They will then connect this to their own homes and discuss how buildings can be improved in order to increase sustainability.

The aims was to try to answer the question “ how can we construct houses that are sustainable, in relation to social, economic and ecological sustainability?”. The summer school was attended by 91 children, aged 10-16 years, from the area of Stockholm city. In this project the students explored the effects of building materials on the energy efficiency and sustainability of houses.

The main activities offered were an introduction about the sustainable development goals and how to work with these goals for a sustainable society. Then the concepts of green construction, how to use recycled material during the construction, heat insulation, thermal bridges and passive houses were explored. An experimental approach was developed to obtain the following tasks:
A competition for designing the most environmental friendly house was launched. This was done as a home-activity involving parents and friends. Contributions were submitted in an electronic form and the winner was announced at the end of the summer school.
