The objectives of the PULCHRA School project is very much in line with the ethos and aims of our school – as an Educate Together School moving to a new premises in September 2020 we are looking forward to establishing ourselves in the new location and creating new partnerships in local communities to foster environmental science education. We believe that we already provide an open and inclusive learning environment but would embrace any further opportunities to make links with the local community, working with local experts and other community members. The model of the students being the ‘City Science Reporters’ sharing their findings with the wider community is one that I believe our students would relish. We also have a strong Green School Group that would love to participate in the project.
We would really like to conduct an investigation in air quality in the local area and how it changes at school pick up and drop off times. We would like to run an information campaign in the local area giving about the impact of air pollution and ways in which it can be reduced.
We would like to focus on air quality and how we can improve the local air quality by encouraging more people to use public transport, walk or cycle to school and for those that have to drive not idle in their cars. We would share the findings with the parents via our school website, social media and school newsletter. We would also like to share them with the adjacent primary school, Holy Trinity, perhaps with the City Science Researchers visiting the school and giving a presentation to staff and pupils. We would also like to connect with the local leisure and community centre, the Samuel Beckett Centre, perhaps putting up a display in their foyer.
