The National Observatory of Athens (NOA), founded in 1842, is the oldest research center in Greece. It is a public body, which operates under the supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology. The METEO scientific unit, being a key pillar of NOA’s Institute for Environmental and Sustainable Research, has significant experience and technical training: (a) in short-term and monthly business weather forecasting, using numerical models emphasizing severe weather events (eg heat waves), (b) the operational operation of hydrometeorological monitoring networks, (c) the operational recording of severe weather events associated with natural disasters and the study of their economic and social impact, and (d) the study of past and future climate change and trends and the assessment of the effects of climate change on the environment, the economy and society.
